To date, new press brakes have normally been standardly equipped with one of the usual tooling systems. The relevant holding systems were integrated into the upper and lower beams. This approach has a number of (disadvantageous) consequences for both the machine builder and the user. The integration of tool-specific holding systems means that extra measures must be taken by the builder that must also be performed as precisely as possible in order to guarantee optimum straightness and parallelism on both the x and the y axis.
For the user, this means that he can only use one specific tooling system for the entire life expectancy of the press brake. If he switches to a machine with a different tooling system, the existing stock of tools will most likely be rendered redundant and useless. Special adapters are required if the old tools are to be made useful. All in all, this does not enhance flexibility and it also increases inventory costs.
Freedom of choice
Based on the idea that users should be free to choose a preferred system at any time, Wila developed its Universal Press Brake Concept. The Universal Press Brake Concept is the latest breakthrough in press brake technology and is most certain to boost quality and productivity.
In the Universal Press Brake Concept, the machine builder supplies the press brake with upper and lower beams that are flat, equipped solely with screw holes with which the clamping system can be attached to the beam. Over the entire length of the machine, the clamping can be aligned in relation to the x axis (Tx), meaning in relation to the back gauge, using adjustment screws all along the upper beam. Exceptionally stringent requirements therefore no longer need to be applied to the straightness of the upper beam. Based on the (New Standard) crowning system on the lower beam, it is also possible to correct not only for machine deflection, but also for local deviations to the y axis (Ty) all along the machine length. Inaccuracies occurring in the course of time due to machine wear can also be corrected in this manner. Production losses and the costs for extensive re-machining of crucial machine parts are therefore avoided. At the same time, pressbrake life expectancy can be extended.
Apply various tooling systems
A decisive advantage is the fact that every press brake made according to this concept requires only a limited number of accessories in order to be made suitable for the New Standard, European Style and American Style tooling systems, and it can also be made to suit customized tooling systems. With the Universal Press Brake Concept, the user can apply various tooling systems and optimize his choice according to factors such as the type of product and type of processing, the series size and the changeover frequency. In this respect, the Universal Press Brake Concept is well suited to the goal of increased press brake productivity.
Stocks of tools never become redundant in the Universal Press Brake Concept. A considerable advantage for the user is also the fact that the Tx/Ty concept is applicable all the time, irrespective of the tooling system type. The details of the clamping and crowning systems specifically designed for the Universal Press Brake Concept are discussed in the Technical details section.
